Do you ever feel like those mice in a maze? No matter how hard you work at it, your house stays a mess.  You feel like you work on it all the time, yet it’s a disaster again the next day. You look at other people with envy who seem to effortlessly keep their house spotless. Maybe you’ve finally given up and decided it’s hopeless. Don’t give up yet! Here are the top three reasons your house isn’t clean, and tips for how to solve these problems.

You Don’t Have Routines

If you’ve looked for solutions to your mess, you’ve seen this advice before. But it’s important enough that it bears repeating. Every person you know who has a clean house has a routine. Some people are born knowing what to do and just naturally do it. Others are not. If you are in the latter category, you need to write your routines down.Don’t get bogged down by having to have the perfect routine. Just write it down and get started. As you begin to follow it each day, you will see where it needs to be tweaked.

Every person’s routine is going to be unique, as each person’s individual life is unique. You may have kids or pets, or both. You may stay home or have a job. You may be single or married.

Don’t get the idea that your routine must be like someone else’s. Just remember to include these five items on your list:

•   Dishes

•   Laundry

•   Bathrooms

•   Making your bed

•   Setting out clothes the night before

These are the five keys to having a routine that actually works. You figure out when you can fit these items in your day and do them. If you are just starting out, only focus on one item at a time. For instance, if you know your dishes are an issue, just concentrate on figuring out when you can manage to get the dishes done. Once you have been consistently getting the dishes done for a while, move onto the next item on your list.

You Aren’t Organized

When your routines are not under control, you need to set up some organization that will help you keep your house tidy.  There are many different ways to organize and books out there for every organizational challenge. There are three areas of your life that will greatly reduce your stress once they are organized.

Paperwork. You have mountains of it. Get it under control. Create a command center wherever your papers pile up. Now schedule a time every week to work on it.

Laundry. Being organized with your laundry, especially putting it away, will make a huge difference. This is an area that is very important to delegate if you live with other people. Laundry is not just one person’s responsibility.

Kitchen. You need to eat, therefore you need to spend time in the kitchen. It’s very difficult to make meals when you don’t know where anything is, or the items you need are hiding in the back of your cabinet.  Chances are, you unpacked your kitchen in a hurry and then left everything that way. Now is the time to re-evaluate and put things where they make the most sense.

You Aren’t Delegating

Do you live by yourself? Then you can skip this section. But if you have anyone living with you, you need to understand that there is no reason you have to do it all yourself. Whatever the task is if you can’t get it done, delegate. This can even be applied to things such as cooking. Don’t beat yourself up if you have takeout pizza occasionally. Real life is crazy busy, and every evening is not conducive to a healthy meal. You can have groceries delivered, saving you time and money. If deep cleaning is your struggle, see if you can fit a once a month maid service into your budget. Do you have kids? Make sure they are doing their part. Even a two-year-old can pick up toys.

Don’t let all the myths that float around about time and cleaning get in your way. Don’t whine that you don’t have enough time, or you don’t know how to clean. We are in an age of information. You can learn what you need to clean, and how to do it. You have time if you use your time wisely. Implementing these three changes in your life will have a huge impact on the cleanliness of your home, and you will find yourself with more time, not less. Try it. You’ll be glad you did.
